Fortnite Gets an Avengers: Infinity War Crossover Tomorrow Because The Zeitgeist Needed This

8 MAY 2018

The biggest thing in cinemas is visiting the biggest thing in videogames for a limited time special event that just demands we all spend this coming weekend playing Fortnite until our eyes bleed.

Announced in Entertainment Weekly, Avengers: Infinity War – the fastest movie ever to bank $1,000,000,000 – is mashing itself up with Fortnite – the most played, and most watched, videogame du jour.

According to the report, the whole idea came together because Joe and Anthony Russo, the co-directors of Avengers: Infinity War, were big fans of the game.

Donald Mustard, Creative Director at Epic Games, shared what happened next with EW:

"Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe [Russo]. And after a bit of geeking out over each other's work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas," Mustard recalled. "It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about. About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started."

It's a nice story. You have to love a fun idea borne of mutual admiration for each others commercial creativity. And given that there are no costs involved with jumping in to check out the crossover experience, everybody wins.

The mode will be called the "Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup" and it'll play much like a normal match, with the usual 100 players diving out of the flying school bus to duke it out until only one remains.

But in this mode, there's also an Infinity Gauntlet hidden on the map. If you find it, you'll become Thanos himself and gain the full power of the Gauntlet to lay waste to your enemies.

What exactly will that power be? Snapping fingers? Blasting lasers? Indestructible? Instant win? We'll find out when the titanic new mode launches on Tuesday, May 8.
